Travel Mada: The Baobabs

Why Visit: The Avenue of the Baobabs is a group of 20-30 baobabs lining the road just north of Morandava. These trees can reach 30 meters high and live over 1,000 years. This is one of the best places in the world to see these trees.

Where is it: The Avenue of the Baobabs is located on the Madagascar’s western coast just north of Morandava.

Getting There: Morandava can be reached by car, brousse, or plane. The flight is about an hour while driving takes 9-12 hours. Once in Morandava you can take a car or taxi about 45 min north to the Avenue of the Baobabs. You can also see the baobabs on your way to or from the Tsingy de Bemaraha. Morandava has a number of hotels, several along the beach, that you can stay at when visiting the avenue.

When to go: .The baobabs can be visited year round, but the best time to view them is at sunrise or sunset. Sunset tends to be a more popular time to visit so if you are looking for a more personal experience try for sunrise.

Other Tips: Consider pairing this trip with the Tsingy de Bemaraha and/or Kirindy Reserve

  1. One of my students was just researching natural landmarks in Madagascar and found this place. His sketch want half bad either. Have a blessed Thanksgiving, it’s not about the food, it’s what’s in your heart.
