“Raw Water”

It seems there’s a new trend in the US and it’s that of “raw water”. In case you haven’t heard of this trend, it’s where instead of drinking the treated water that comes out of your tap, people are spending insane amounts of money to drink untreated water.

There’s a reason my host brother has never had a drink of water that wasn’t boiled first. There’s a reason why my water is filtered and chlorinated before I can drink it. There are several reasons actually, diarrhea, cholera, dysentery, typhoid, polio, and giardia, just to name a few. Diarrhea related diseases is one of the top three causes of death in children under 5 in Madagascar. 2 million people (800,000 are children under 5) die each year because they don’t have access to clean, treated water.

That’s right, 2 million people die each year drinking “raw water”. In the past year over a million people in Yemen has contracted cholera due to unclean water. While the people who can afford raw water can also pay for a medical care associated with diseases like cholera and giardia, most of the world isn’t so lucky.

Raw water companies claim that this water has probiotics and healthy minerals that the body misses out on by drinking treated water. Trust me, the diarrhea is going to send those probiotics through you so fast they won’t have time to do much good. And it’s possible those trace minerals are contamination from an old uranium mine. If you don’t trust the water that comes out of your taps why would trust the water being sold to you for $20 a gallon that comes out of a stranger’s backyard?

So let’s all put our money towards the 2 billion people that don’t have access to clean drinking water instead spending it pretending we are suddenly immune to things that have been killing humans for centuries.
